Water damage and insurance: what documentation actually helps

September 15, 2026 · Wit Restoration

When water damage turns into an insurance claim, documentation does a lot of the heavy lifting. You do not need to be an expert, but a few habits and the right records from your mitigation company make the process far smoother.

Document before you clean up

Take photos and video of the water and the affected areas before you move things or start cleaning. Note the source if you know it and roughly when it happened. Early, clear images are hard to recreate later.

What a mitigation company should hand you

A good mitigation job comes with records: photos of the damage and the work, moisture readings logged over the drying period, and an itemized scope of what was done. Those are the documents that show the loss and the response clearly.

Most policies expect prompt mitigation

Acting quickly to prevent further damage is usually part of your responsibility as a policyholder. Keeping a record of when you noticed the problem and when you called for help supports that you did your part.

We document, your insurer decides

We provide the photos, readings, and scope, and with your permission we can share them with your insurer. Coverage and payment depend on your policy and your claim. We do not approve, deny, or settle claims, and we will never tell you something is covered when that is your insurer's call.
