What to do in the first hour of a water leak

September 10, 2026 · Wit Restoration

A water leak gets worse every hour it sits. The good news is that a few calm, safe steps in the first hour can protect your home and make the mitigation that follows faster and less costly. Here is what to do, and what to leave to a professional.

Stop the water, if you can do it safely

If you can reach the shutoff for the fixture or the main water valve without going near standing water or an electrical panel, turn it off. If you cannot reach it safely, do not force it. Your safety comes first, and calling us is faster than risking a shock or a fall.

Stay away from water near electricity

Do not wade into standing water that is near outlets, appliances, or an electrical panel. If water has reached electrical, stay out of the area and call a professional. This is one job that is never worth doing yourself.

Move what you can, easily

Lift small valuables, electronics, and anything sitting on the floor to a dry area. If it is easy and safe, raise furniture legs onto blocks, and open interior doors to help air move. Skip any demolition; pulling up flooring or cutting drywall is part of the mitigation scope, not a first-hour task.

Take photos before you clean up

Before you move much or start mopping, take clear photos and video of the water and the affected areas. This early documentation is exactly what your insurer will want later, and it costs you nothing but a minute.

Call for mitigation

The sooner water is extracted and drying begins, the more of your home you keep. When you call (251) 333-6911, tell us the source, where the water is, and whether it is still coming in, so we can confirm availability and head your way.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for emergency services. If there is sewage, contaminated water, or an electrical hazard, stay clear and call a professional right away.
